Graphic Novel Continued...

Well, I'm not sure if you would call my graphic novel a story, or a novel for that matter, but it is certainly graphic. There's no real story or narrative, it's more of a "picture book"; a series of abstract illustrations portraying some of Hong Kong's best known attractions.

For a way of linking all the images together, I’ve called the book; “The Story Of The Flying Star Ferry”. A star ferry is a popular way of travelling across Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong.

Anyway, you don’t actually get to see the flying star ferry, but it’s as though the imagery is seen through the ferry’s eyes as it travels. This flying ferry ideas stems from the psychedelic/fantasy-style approach I’ve taken with the main focus being on pattern and colour. I chose this approach based on the fact that Hong Kong is a very colourful place with lots of patterns.

So here is a link to the final book:

Graphic Novel

A short and sweet post about my graphic novel on Hong Kong.

More details on the story itself will follow in the coming days, but for now, I'll just say it's very abstract and visually psychedelic...

Catch Up...

Some bits and bobs that I've forgot to put up, from the various Hong Kong projects so far...

Development of the earlier character idea where they are wearing masks.

The information part of my HK leaflet/poster combo...

The text and background wasn't totally clear, so I went back and changed it...

I also went back and changed the poster slightly to make it obvious that it was actually a cityscape of Hong Kong...

Finally, some random experiments...

A BaGua Mirror done digitally in Adobe Illustrator and a vertical cityscape that I've tryed to make look like a Chinese mask by using the Symphony Of Lights, also done in Illustrator.

Repeat Patterns

From my photo sketches, I've made some repeat patterns...

I think my favourite is the bottom one, although I really like the 'Moving Lights' one.

Moving Lights

Particularly pretty photos I had taken in New York were from a moving bus, it was also dark outside, so there were lots of moving lights and shapes.

From these, I have created some patterns using gold and silver pens on black paper...

The last is a still city scape using the same media.

My Own Patterns

Some patterns I've created myself, working from the photos...

Edited Pattern Photos

A selection of photos that I have edited to create some nice patterns and effects...
